Problem
User receives error inside multiple different menus (inside Controller).
Symptom
The root element is missing
Cause
There are many possible causes for the generic "The root element is missing" error.

This Technote specifically relates to the scenario where the cause was that the customer had packaged the Controller client via Microsoft App-V (also known as "Softricity SoftGrid" or "Microsoft Application Virtualization").
- IMPORTANT: IBM does not officially support the use of App-V (to package/distribute the Controller client).
- Therefore if the customer has problems using Controller (delivered by App-V) they may be asked to reproduce the problem inside a 'standard' environment (not using App-V), before receiving further support on the issue.
If a customer decides to use App-V anyway, then this Technote is designed to help them achieve their goal.
Resolving The Problem
Fix:
IBM does not officially support the use of App-V
- Therefore, to be officially supported, the customer should re-install the Controller client in a 'standard' way (to ensure that they are using Controller in a supported environment).
Workaround:
Some customers have taken the decision to use App-V despite the fact that this is not officially supported by IBM. They found that the following tips helped package/deploy the Controller client successfully:
(1) Re-package the Cognos Controller client *without* capturing (saving) the following folder (inside the App-V package): %APPDATA%\Cognos
(2) To avoid an Excel Link is not installed’, configure the setting 'local interaction' to ‘FALSE’ (within the OSD file for the main Cognos controller application).
