Error: 'The system cannot find the file specified' occurs when launching doclink from Outlook

Question & Answer

Question

You attempt to launch a Lotus Notes doclink in Microsoft Outlook. If Notes is running, the document opens correctly. If Notes is not running, you receive the following error message:

    "The system cannot find the file specified".

If you click OK on the dialog box, Notes launches and the document opens.

In one particular case, Outlook was not being used. The user was just trying to open Notes when the error occurred.

Answer

This situation is usually caused by the Notes add-in for the McAfee anti-virus program. To determine whether this add-in is in use, search for these entries in the notes.ini file:

    AddInMenus=NCMenu

    EXTMGR_ADDINS=NCExtMgr

To resolve the problem, either remove or comment out these lines from the notes.ini file or reinstall the McAfee application so that the associated files are present and registered correctly.

In the case in which Outlook was not being used, the workaround was to delete the above lines in the notes.ini file and then installing the anti-virus program.
