Troubleshooting

Problem

Resolving The Problem

This document provides a resolution for an error which occurs during initialization of the Java Virtual Machine when IBM i Access Client Solutions is attempted to be started.

If the following message is received, the customer's client PC is too overbooked to run a JVM that needs 1Gb of linear address space:

Error occurred during initialization of VM
Could not reserve enough space for object heap
Could not create the Java virtual machine.

IBM i Access Client Solutions requests a 1GB memory heap for the Java Virtual Machine that our acsbundle.jar will run in from the underlying PC operating system. This can be tested with the java -version from a PC command prompt, you should run the following commands to determine the Java version installed and if there is enough lateral memory to run the product.

java -version
java -Xmx1024m -version

The likely best solution is to add more memory to the PC's Operating System. Though it may be possible to use the above command to determine what memory size can be loaded and then specify that memory size with a manual call to the java -jar command.
