Troubleshooting
Problem
In IBM Rational ClearCase Unified Change Management (UCM) the major link between a project VOB and a component VOB is the Component Root Directory hyperlink. This technote explains the cause of the error, Missing root directory hlink for component, and how to recover from a missing or broken Component Root Directory hyperlink.
Symptom
There are two main types of commands which can receive this error:
1. Commands which access the component object and try to follow the link to the component VOB.
Example:
V:\>cleartool lscomp -long -invob \TestPVOB
"TestComponent"
04-Jun-01.13:51:07 by user1.clearusers@client1
root directory: "\TestComponent"
owner: user1
group: clearusers
"User_test"
04-Jun-01.14:26:09 by user1.clearusers@client1
cleartool: Error: Missing root directory hlink for component "User_test".
"alpha"
04-Jun-01.18:06:39 by user1.clearusers@client1
cleartool: Error: Missing root directory hlink for component "alpha".
You may see this issue when attempting to remove a component where the component VOB is already removed.
2. Commands which access the component VOB and try to follow the link to the component object.
Example:
V:\>cleartool deliver
cleartool: Error: Missing root directory hlink for component "alpha".
cleartool: Error: Unexpected error in deliver.
In this case the component may not be properly identified:
cleartool: Error: Missing root directory hlink for component "???".
