ERROR: java.nio.channels.OverlappingFileLockException when updating Installation Manager

Troubleshooting


Problem

You have IBM Installation Manager version 1.4.2 installed. You update Installation Manager to a later version using imcl or IBMIM. The update fails with an error.

Symptom

You receive the following error when updating Installation Manager:

ERROR: java.nio.channels.OverlappingFileLockException

Resolving The Problem

To work around issue, you can either run the update from a later version of Installation Manager or modify an .ini file from version 1.4.2.

Run the installation command from a later version of Installation Manager

1. Extract the installation files for the later version of Installation Manager.

2. Run one of the following commands:

installc
userinstc
groupinstc

Modify an .ini file from Installation Manager version 1.4.2

1. Locate the installations files for Installation Manager version 1.4.2

2. Open either the imcl.ini or the IBMIM.ini file.
If you update Installation Manager from the command line, edit imcl.ini. If you update Installation Manager using a silent installation, edit IBMIM.ini.

3. Add the following line in the -vmargs section of the .ini file:
-Dsun.nio.ch.disableSystemWideOverlappingFileLockCheck=true
