"...error generating the XML document ... Invalid high surrogate character (0xDCD0)" when trying to define import spec (for data via "Import from Framework Manager")

Troubleshooting


Problem

Customer creates a Framework Manager (FM) model on SAP BW data. Customer uses Report Studio to create a report on the published package. The Report Studio report runs OK (and delivers data). However when the user tries to use Controller to create an import specification, they receive problems. Specifically, user clicks "Transfer - External Data - Define Import Specification". Underneath section "Framework Manager" user clicks blue "Model Name" and chooses model. User clicks blue "Name of Report" and chooses report. User clicks tab "Fields (1)". User clicks "Field". User receives error.

Symptom

Problem only affects some (not all) report selections. Error may vary between reports. For example:

Report #1:

    IBM Cognos Controller Error
    Unhandled exception has occured in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.

    System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: Server was unable to process request. ---> SystemInvalidOperationException: There was an error generating the XML document. ---> System.ArgumentException: Invalid high surrogate character (0xDCD0). A high surrogate character must have a value from range (0xD800 - 0xDBFF).

Report #2:
    IBM Cognos Controller Error
