Error "The configuration area ... not writable" at Rational Functional Tester v8.2.X start

Troubleshooting


Problem

Attempts to start the testing tool in v8.2.X result in error " ... choose a writable location using the '-configuration' ... "

Symptom



ERROR MESSAGE

The error message opens immediately, even before the workspace dialog box.

An example of the full error message is as follows. Note the trailing space in the path.

The configuration area at 'G:\IBM\RFT\eclipse\conf ' is not writable.

Please choose a writable location using the '-configuration' command

line option.


STEPS TO REPRODUCE

  1. Add the following line to <install dir>\configuration\config.ini with a trailing space.

    osgi.configuration.area=F\:\\IBM\\RFT\\eclipse\\conf

    Where F: is the user's home drive.


  2. Start IBM Rational Functional Tester (RFT).



OTHER SYMPTOMS

  • If you remove the trailing space, RFT starts error free.

  • Version 8.1.1.3 of the product starts error free if the value of the osgi.configuration.area parameter contains a trailing space.

Cause

RFT 8.2.X has a newer Eclipse version than RFT 8.1.1.3. The newer Eclipse version does not trim trailing spaces.

This issue has been identified as a defect and has been logged under Eclipse Bug 362648 and APAR PM51582.

Resolving The Problem

Write the value of the osgi.configuration.area parameter without trailing space.
