For Enterprise Extender customers, what are the performance impacts of running HPRCLKRT=ADAPTIVE?

Question & Answer

Question

We are considering running with HPRCLKRT=ADAPTIVE, but we would like more information on the possible performance impacts.

Answer

The SNA Resource Definition Reference points out that "The adaptive mode is designed to increase the overall performance of RTP pipes when packet loss is occurring. However, RTP performance and CPU overhead are system dependent and might vary."

If the system is a single processor system, or if CPU utilization is already at a high level during peak periods (i.e. CPU-bound configurations), HPRCLKRT=ADAPTIVE may push CPU utilization higher than the tolerable levels set by the system administrator(s).

For multiprocessor systems where the CPU utilization is not already at a high level during peak periods, and where the Enterprise Extender configurations have a defined capacity of 1 Gb or higher access speeds, setting the VTAM start option HPRCLKRT=ADAPTIVE is recommended for significantly reducing retransmissions over EE connections.
