Encountering an out of memory error message during an installation or update on Linux

Troubleshooting

Problem

Attempts to install or update IBM Rational Software Architect for WebSphere Software on Linux results in the error "OutOfMemory".

Cause

On Linux operating systems, the default heap size for IBM Installation Manager is 512 MB, which is not enough for Rational Software Architect for WebSphere Software when a large number of plug-ins laid down on the file system.

Possible causes are as follows:

  • Localization packs are installed.
  • The product shares the same Eclipse environment with other products that have a large number of plug-ins.

Resolving The Problem

WORKAROUND:

  1. Find the the IBMIM.ini file in IBM Installation Manager installation directory
    Default directory: /opt/IBM/InstallationManager/eclipse.

  2. Edit the file and add the parameter:
    -Xmx1024m

  3. Restart Installation Manager

  4. Perform the update.
