Troubleshooting
Problem
This document explains how to enable HSL or Virtual OptiConnect on IBM POWER5 systems with an HMC version 7.
Resolving The Problem
Note: This document does not apply to V5R3 on non-IBM POWER5 systems. To enable HSL or Virtual OptiConnect on non-POWER5 systems, use the System Service Tools (run the STRSST command).
To enable HSL or Virtual OptiConnect on POWER5 systems with an HMC, do the following:
Step 1: Connect to the HMC. Select appropriate server name and partition, and click the button for pop-up menu to the right of the partition name.

Step 2: Select Configuration and then select Manage Profiles.

Step 3: On the Managed Profiles -- RCHASMA1 screen, select the profile name and then select Actions.

Step 4: Select Edit.

Step 5: Select the OptiConnect tab. Select both Virtual Opticonnect and HSL Opticonnect regardless of what is needed and click OK.

Step 6: The partition must be powered down with RESTART(*NO), and then each partition that was enabled must be activated (powered up) individually for the changes on that partition to take effect. This applies to HSL and virtual OptiConnect.
Note: Development has confirmed that a RESTART(*NO) on the partition is required to enable OptiConnect. However, it is possible using the HMC command line to enable Virtual OptiConnect without an IPL of the partition. Refer to Rochester Support Center knowledgebase document New for instructions on Dynamically Enabling and Disabling Virtual OptiConnect on HMC-Managed Systems: . Note that the configuration will be lost at the next IPL.
Step 7: Because the partition has been powered off, it is necessary to reactivate the partition. Select the partition and then select Configuration and Manage Profiles.

Step 8: Select the profile and then select Actions and Activate.

Simply selecting Activate all will not enable the changes. For virtual OptiConnect, after activating the partition, sign on the partition. Issue the command WRKHDWRSC *CSA. You will see something similar to the following. If Activate All is used, there will be nothing listed because Virtual OptiConnect was not really enabled.
LB06 Operational
SOC03 268A-000 Operational
SOC02 268A-000 Operational
SB05 Operational
SOC04 268B-000 Operational
SOC06 268B-000 Operational
SOC05 268B-000 Operational
For HSL, after activating the partition, sign on the partition. You will see something similar to the following after issuing the command DSPOPCLNK (assuming 5722SS1 Option 23 is installed and the QSOC subsystem is active). If it is not, you must go through the Hardware Service Manager in SST to verify if HSL is enabled. Note that 5722SS1 Option 23 is not needed if HSL is to be used for Clustering or IASP connectivity.

Note: Other partitions on the HSL loop or connected using Virtual OptiConnect might require ending and restarting the QSOC subsystem, assuming the partition already had HSL or Virtual OptiConnect enabled.
