How do I download and install IBM Developer for z Systems?

Answer

Use the instructions on these tabbed pages to download and install:

  • IM and IDz Client: IBM Installation Manager and the IBM Developer for z Systems client
  • IDz Client: The IBM Developer for z Systems client (for users who already have IBM Installation Manager installed)
  • License: A license for the IBM Developer for z Systems client
  • IDz Server: The IBM Developer for z Systems server

Downloading and installing IBM Installation Manager and the IBM Developer for z Systems client

  1. Open a browser on the Mainframe DEV Downloads page.
  2. In the IBM Explorer for z/OS Aqua box, click Eclipse Tools.
  3. On the Install Eclipse Tools page, under the IBM Explorer for z/OS Aqua table, scroll down until you see the row for IBM Developer for z Systems.
  4. Click the icon in the Client (IBM IM) column.
  5. On the IBM Installation Manager (IM) page, select the download icon in the column that corresponds to your operating system in the IM for z/OS Explorer Aqua V3.1 row.
  6. Save the installation archive file to a location on your computer.
  7. Extract the file contents.
  8. To install the products in the home directory of the current user, run the command file shown in the User Install column for your operating system.
  9. To install the products with administrator authority, run the command file shown in the Administrator Install column for your operating system.
  10. After IBM Installation Manager restarts, click the Install icon on the Installation Manager window.
  11. In the Install Packages window, select IBM Developer for z Systems, and then click Next.

    IBM Installation Manager guides you through the installation and prompts you to accept the license agreement, choose the installation location, select translations and features to install, and configure a z/OS connection.

  12. Select installation options and click Install.

    The installation takes several minutes.

  13. When the installation is complete, click Finish to close IBM Installation Manager.

Downloading and installing the IBM Developer for z Systems client

If you already have IBM Installation Manager installed, you can download a repository file for IBM Developer for z Systems, and use that file to install the product.

  1. Open a browser on the Mainframe DEV Downloads page.
  2. In the IBM Explorer for z/OS Aqua box, click Eclipse Tools.
  3. On the Install Eclipse Tools page, under the IBM Explorer for z/OS Aqua table, scroll down until you see the row for IBM Developer for z Systems.
  4. Click the icon in the Client (IM Repo Zip) column.
  5. On the Use pre-packaged repository zip files to prepare a local repository page, select the download icon in the IBM Developer for z Systems row.
  6. Accept the license agreement and then save the idz_im_repo.zip file to a location on your computer.
  7. Extract the file contents.

    Notice that the contents include a file named repository.config. IBM Installation Manager uses this file to install the product.

  8. Start IBM Installation Manager and select File > Preferences.
  9. On the Repositories page, click Add Repository.
  10. On the Add Repository window, specify the full path name of the repository.config file and click OK.
  11. On the Preferences page, click OK.
  12. Click the Install icon on the IBM Installation Manager window.
  13. In the Install Packages window, select IBM Developer for z Systems, and then click Next.

  14. Select installation options and click Install.

Installing a permanent license for IBM Developer for z Systems

IBM Developer for z Systems is installed with a trial license, which enables product use for 90 days. To use the product beyond the 90 day trial period, you must install a permanent license. These instructions explain how to install an Authorized User license. For information about managing other license types, see Managing licenses for IBM Developer for z Systems

  1. Obtain a product activation kit from the system administrator who manages product licenses at your site. The product activation kit is available in Passport Advantage.

    An activation kit is a .jar file that is installed into IBM Developer for z Systems to activate the product for an authorized user. The activation kit must be in a location on your computer or on a file server or network location that you can point to from IBM Installation Manager.

    If the product activation kit file that you obtain is a .zip file, extract the contents. The extracted contents include the .jar file.

  2. To start IBM Developer for z Systems from the Start menu, select All Programs, and then navigate to IBM Software Delivery Platform > IBM Developer for z Systems v14.1.x > IBM Developer for z Systems.
  3. On the Select a directory as workspace window, choose a location for the workspace and click OK.
  4. On the menu bar, click Help > Manage Licenses.
  5. On the Manage Licenses window, click Apply License.

    The IBM Installation Manager Manage Licenses window opens.

  6. Select the product name, and then select the Import Product Activation Kit radio button and click Next.
  7. In the Repository field of the Import Activation Kit window, specify the full path name of the activation kit, or click Browse to navigate to the file, and then click Next.
  8. On the Licenses window, accept the terms of the license agreement, and then click Finish.
  9. After the license is imported, click Finish.
  10. On the IBM Developer for z Systems Manage Licenses window, click Refresh License Status.

    The License Type column is updated to Permanent.

  11. Click Done.

Downloading and installing the IBM Developer for z Systems server

  1. Open a browser on the Mainframe DEV Downloads page.
  2. In the IBM Explorer for z/OS Aqua box, click Host Components.
  3. On the Install Host Components page, scroll down to the IBM Developer for z Systems Server section.
  4. To download and install the server components:
    1. Click the download icon for the product version you want to install.
    2. On the Software License Agreement page, accept the license agreement.

      A window opens, prompting you to open or save the .zip file that contains the server components.

    3. Save the IDz_Host_SMPE-14.1.x.zip file to a location on your computer.
    4. Extract the file contents.

      The file contains

      • All of the host components of IBM Developer for z Systems,
      • A Documentation folder with all of the documentation you need for the installation, and
      • A Developer for z Systems - Host Installation Guide.htm file with instructions for installing the IBM Developer for z Systems server. This file refers to all of the other documentation as necessary.

    5. To begin the installation, open the Developer for z Systems - Host Installation Guide.htm file in a browser and follow the instructions in it.
