Document Generation fails with "An invalid XML character" message in Rational Publishing Engine when using Rational Quality Manager Document data source

Problem

Attempt to generate a report in Rational Publishing Engine (RPE) when using Rational Quality Manager Document (RQM) data source results in an error: Caused by: javax.xml.stream.XMLStreamException: An invalid XML character (Unicode: 0xffffffff) was found in the element content of the document.

Symptom

This is the error message seen when the report is run:
