IBM Support

"The document could not be printed" when printing PDF version of System Report, caused by Windows user profile settings

Troubleshooting

Problem

User runs any system report (also known as 'standard report'). User changes report output format from the default (HTML) to PDF. The report dispays OK. User tries to print the report. User receives an error message.

Symptom

Adobe Reader
The document could not be printed

Cause

NOTE:

  • The message is coming from the third-party (non-IBM) product "Adobe Acrobat Reader".
  • There are many different possible causes for the generic "The document could not be printed" error message.

This Technote specifically relates to the scenario where the cause is that the Windows user profiles are configured with settings that are incompatible with Adobe Acrobat printing from downloaded PDF files.

Environment

In one real-life example, the following was true:

  • Users running Controller via Terminal Server (Microsoft RDS)
  • Customer was using RDS "User Profile Disks" (UPD)
  • UPD was configured with "Store all user settings and data on the user profile disk" ticked/enabled.

Resolving The Problem

1. Reconfigure UPD so that 'User profile disks data settings' are configured as 'Store only the following folders on the user profile disk'

Then make sure that the following are unticked:

  • Contacts
  • Desktop
  • Documents
  • Downloads
  • Links
  • Music
  • Pictures

2. Afterwards, reboot the Terminal Server
3. Test.
