Disks show as offline in Windows 2008 after Data ONTAP upgrade

Troubleshooting

Problem

After upgrading Data ONTAP from 7.2.x to 7.3.x, all LUNs attached to Windows 2008 servers appear as 'offline.'

Symptom

LUNs attached to Windows 2008 servers appear as 'offline.' after an upgrade from Data ONTAP 7.2.x to 7.3.x. However, Disks are okay after bringing them back online.

DISKPART> list disk
Disk ### Status     Size    Free    Dyn Gpt
-------- ---------- ------- ------- --- ---
Disk 0    Online      18 GB    0 B
Disk 1    Offline    306 MB  306 MB *
Disk 2    Offline    306 MB  306 MB *

Cause

Data ONTAP upgrades to 7.3.x without using the nondisruptive upgrade (NDU) process will change the LUN revision numbers. Data ONTAP versions prior to 7.3 used a LUN revision number of 0.2. However, if the Filer was upgraded using NDU, the LUN revision number retains its previous version.

For example:

MPIO\DISK&VEN_NETAPP&PROD_LUN&REV_0.2_\1&7F6AC24&0&4334677547345438416C4B4F: NETAPP LUN Multi-Path Disk Device

After 7.2.x, LUN revision numbers took on the version of Data ONTAP and the filer was upgraded to:

MPIO\DISK&VEN_NETAPP&PROD_LUN&REV_7310\1&7F6AC24&0&5672482F2F4A54344E46674C: NETAPP LUN Multi-Path Disk Device

In Windows 2008, a new feature was introduced that ensured all new disks added to the system were set to 'offline' to start to ensure the following:

  1. Disks with multiple paths (but without MPIO been installed) did not get corrupted.
  2. Adding disks to a cluster easier.

In the instance of the LUN revision changing, Windows 2008 sees the disks as 'new' disks and treats them as such. This behavior is also seen in newly created LUNs mapped to a Windows 2008 server from FilerView or the CLI.

Environment

  • Windows 2008 server
  • MPIO of some fashion (ONTAP DSM or MSDSM)
  • Data ONTAP upgrade from 7.2.x to 7.3.x
  • FCP
  • iSCSI
  • Data ONTAP DSM 3.3.1 for Windows MPIO
  • Data ONTAP DSM 3.3 for Windows MPIO
  • Data ONTAP DSM 3.2R1 for Windows MPIO

Resolving The Problem

There are several options:

  1. Use nondisruptive upgrades of Data ONTAP (with takeover/giveback) to prevent the LUN revisions from changing.
  2. Use SnapDrive to disconnect/reconnect drives, as it will automate the process of bringing drives online.
  3. Bring the drives 'online' manually in diskpart or Windows Disk Management GUI.
