Abstract

IBM® has released a new Disk Qualification Package (DQP), qual_devices_v3

Content

Summary

IBM® has released a new Disk Qualification Package (DQP), qual_devices_v3. This release of DQP adds the sanitize feature to the X446_RALS200MCHT drive and provides updated notification for drives having down-level FW. This DQP is only to be used in IBM storage systems running Data ONTAP 7.3 or later.

If you are running Data ONTAP® 7.2.7 or earlier, DO NOT install this new DQP; instead it is highly recommended that you upgrade Data ONTAP as discussed in the below Issue Description. Only after you upgrade to Data ONTAP 7.3 or a later version is it permissible to install this DQP.

Problem Description

The sanitize feature is not supported for drive X446_RALS200MCHT. This new DQP – in conjunction with updating the drive firmware to NA01 or later - adds the sanitize feature.

As always, in order for your systems to recognize and utilize the newly qualified drives, the systems require the latest qual_devices_v3 file found in the DQP.

Important Note for customers running Data ONTAP 7.2.x:
DQP is NOT backwards compatible with 7.2.x; adding DQP or any of the newly qualified drives to your IBM storage system might cause a serious storage disruption. Therefore, it is highly recommended to upgrade Data ONTAP immediately. As of this writing, the latest versions for each Data ONTAP release family are 7.3.7P2, 8.0.5, 8.1.2, and 8.2.

Symptom

System panic if installing this DQP on systems running 7.2.x.

Solution

  • Ensure you have an appropriate version of Data ONTAP per the Issue Description above.
  • Per the DQP installation instructions found at this link: Disk Qualification Package, download and install the latest DQP.
Additional Information

An important feature of DQP is notification of down-level drive firmware: If a drive in your system has firmware less than the minimum version specified in the DQP, Data ONTAP will post an EMS message informing you to update your firmware.

Note that all storage systems must use at least the minimum required version of Data ONTAP as printed on the disk drives to take advantage of their full capacity.

To determine the version of DQP (qual_devices_v3) on your storage system, enter the following command:

Data ONTAP 7G/7-Mode:

  • rdfile /etc/qual_devices_v3

Clustered Data ONTAP:
  • node run -node <nodename> -command rdfile /etc/qual_devices_v3

The header of the file contains a date code. If your date code is less than that specified in the Title above, or if there is no qual_devices_v3 file on your system, download and install the latest version of the Disk Qualification Package.

FAQs:

1. How does Data ONTAP determine if the DQP file has changed? And, how frequently does it check for changes in the installed DQP file?
    • Data ONTAP reads the modification time of the DQP file to determine if it has changed or not. If the file modification time is different from the last time it checked, it processes it.
    • Data ONTAP checks approximately every 5 minutes to see if the file modification time has changed.
2. Does Data ONTAP load DQP after a reboot?
    • Yes, it loads DQP as a part of the boot process. This may take place a few minutes after the initial boot process so a little delay is expected.
3. How do I force Data ONTAP to re-read the qual_devices_v3 file?
    • There is no need to force a re-read of the DQP file. If you have a new file it will be read and processed at the next 5-minute poll.
As a best practice, you should always update IBM products with the latest version of firmware and software to ensure optimal reliability, availability, and serviceability.
