Directives to Add to an Apache HTTP Server to Force Browsers to Use the Cached Static File

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document provides information on how to disable the Etag header.

Resolving The Problem

To disable the Etag header, you should add the following lines in the Apache Configuration file:

Header set Cache-Control "public"
Header Always Unset ETag
FileETag None

In addition, you may use the cache control with a date far in the future. Examples follow:

Header Always Set Cache-Control "max-age=290304000, public"
Header Always Set Expires "Thu, 15 Apr 2010 20:00:00 GMT"

Note: The steps listed above can be useful to resolve PCI scan errors regarding CVE-2003-1418.
