This technote describes the major difference between a data model and a logical data model in IBM® Rational XDE™.
In logical data modeling, it is possible to use information gathered from analyzing business needs to identify entities, define attributes that describe the entities, and create relationships between the entities. It is also possible to use a logical data model as a basis for implementing a database solution that meets business needs.
In XDE, it is possible to create a logical data model by modeling Unified Modeling Language™ (UML) classes that represent data modeling entities, and modeling attributes and relationships for those classes. Transforming the UML classes generates physical data model tables, and XDE maps those tables to the UML classes.
In XDE, a physical data model is called a data model. It is possible to model tables with columns that store data, and relationships that relate the tables to each other. It is also possible to model tablespaces that manage the physical device space for storing data, and assign tables to a tablespace or directly to a database component. All these elements require a physical implementation through either a database management system (DBMS) language or the ANSI® SQL 92 standard. The language used in the data model is determined by setting the default database target or by specifying a database target for your database in the Properties window.
