The difference between Floating and Named User Licenses

Troubleshooting

Problem

The following technote explains the difference between IBM® Rational® Floating and Named User licenses.

Resolving The Problem

Floating license keys are to be used with the IBM Rational License Server. Floating licenses are associated to either the host name and host ID or to the host name and NIC (Ethernet) address of the machine that has the Rational License Server installed. The product is installed on client machines. In order to check out a license to use the product, client machines must point to the License Server. Client machines use the following options in the License Key Administrator to do so, License Key Administrator > Settings > Service Configuration > Use License Server. The number of licenses registered to and installed on the license server limits the number of concurrent users.

Named User licenses are similar to Floating licenses and may be used with the Rational License Server. Named User licenses are associate to either the host name and host ID or to the host name and NIC (Ethernet) address of the machine that has the Rational License Server installed. In addition, Named User licenses are associated to specific user ID's, this restricts the licenses to being checked out only by specific users. The user ID's are listed in the options file on the license server. The number of licenses registered limits the number of user IDs in the list.

For example:

INCLUDE <feature_name> USER <userid>
