Summary
Starting with a disk drive resource name, you can quickly determine the drive's physical location code.
Steps
Local disk units on IBM i will have resource names with the following conventions: DDxxx or DMPxxx. DDxxx units will map to a single unit. DMPxxxx ('DASD Multipath') will have multiple resource names that map to a single physical disk location code.
- Print a Rack Configuration:
A. STRSST and sign inFormat . . . . . . . 1 1=132 characters wide, 2=80 characters wide
B. Option 1. Start a service tool
C. Option 7. Hardware service manager
D. Press F6=Print configurationInformation printed . 1 1=Packaging resources sorted by location (not
available in 80 characters wide) -
Exit out of Service Tools, and display the QPCSMPRT spooled file, using: WRKJOB Option 4

The 4th column is the Resource Name, and the 6th column is Location [Code]. It may also be a good idea to document the Serial Number, for verification purposes, if you are removing or formatting the drive(s).
If the resource names are DMPxxxx, you should expect to see multiple lines that show the same Serial Number and Location Code.
