Determine the driver version of the network card using Windows' regedit

Troubleshooting

Problem

The Windows Tivoli Storage Manager client supports the WinPE environment for backups and restore.

Resolving The Problem

For performance problem determination it may be helpful to compare the network card driver active with WinPE booted and compare this against the card driver for a native Windows.

The following steps will allow you to identify the network card driver:

1. Run ipconfig /all to determine the "name" of the network card. Under WinPE, this will show up as a long number string. Copy this string into the clipboard.

2. Run regedit and search for the string copied in step 1.

3. There will be a few matches but the one you are looking for is in the HKLM\System\ControlSet area.

4. Under one of the subfolders labelled 0001, 0002, etc. you will find the keys: DriverDate, DriverDesc, DriverVersion, and Provider. For a PL300 you will see the following:
DriverDate: 10-1-2002
DriverDesc: Intel 8255x-based PCI Ethernet Adapter (10/100)
DriverVersion: 6.6.8.1
Provider: Microsoft
