Installing and Removing Memory Modules Safely

Precautions and Warnings

Before starting, note the following:

  • Certain repairs require a certified service technician.

  • Be aware that memory modules can be hot after the system is powered down; allow them to cool before handling.
  • Handle memory modules by the edges, avoiding contact with the components.
 

Installing Memory Modules

To install memory modules, follow these steps:

  1. Power down the system and disconnect it from the electrical outlet.
  2. Access the system's interior. Refer to the relevant section for instructions.
  3. Remove the cooling shroud. Consult the guide on removing the cooling shroud.
  4. Locate the memory module sockets.
  5. Release the memory module ejectors by pressing outward to allow module insertion.
  6. Align the memory module with the socket's alignment key and insert it. Note that the socket's design allows for insertion in only one direction.
  7. Secure the memory module by pressing down until the ejectors lock into position. Properly seated modules will have their ejectors aligned with those on other occupied sockets.
  8. Repeat the process for any additional memory modules.
  9. Replace the cooling shroud. Follow the instructions for reinstalling the cooling shroud.
  10. Close the system and refer to the section on closing the system.
  11. Restore power to the system and peripherals.
  12. Enter the System Setup program (by pressing ) and verify the System Memory setting reflects the new installation.
  13. If necessary, recheck the installation of the memory modules if the System Memory setting is incorrect.
  14. Run a system memory test using the system diagnostics. Consult the guide on running the system diagnostics.
 
 
 

Removing Memory Modules

To remove memory modules:

  1. Power down the system and disconnect it from the electrical outlet.
  2. Remove the cooling shroud. Refer to the relevant section for instructions.
  3. Locate the memory module sockets.
  4. Release the memory module by pressing down and out on the ejectors until it pops out of the socket.
  5. Handle the memory module by the edges, avoiding contact with its components.
  6. Reinstall the cooling shroud.
  7. Close the system. Follow the instructions for closing the system.
  8. Restore power to the system and peripherals.
