Deleting MSXML 4 related files results in IBM i2 iBridge reinstalling them

Troubleshooting

Problem

Attempts to remove all MSXML 4 files from the system using IBM i2 iBridge results in iBridge reinstalling them upon next use of the product.

Symptom

After deleting MSXML4.DLL and MSXML4r.DLL from the system, iBridge will then reinstall the files upon next launch. This can be observed by navigating to the C:\Windows\SysWOW64 or C:\Windows\System32 folders where the files reside.

Cause

The files are reinstalled due to a requirement present in the MSI installer for IBM i2 iBridge. Be aware that iBridge does use MSXML 6 when running but due to the installer requirement, the MSXML 4 DLL files must still be present.

Environment

Analyst's Notebook 8.9.9

IBM i2 iBridge 8.9.1
Microsoft Windows

Diagnosing The Problem

After verifying that Analyst's Notebook 8.9.9 or above, and iBridge 8.9.1 is installed, perform the following to recreate the scenario:

  1. Navigate to C:\Windows\SysWOW64 or C:\Windows\System32 and locate MSXML4.DLL and MSXML4R.DLL.
  2. Remove the two files from the system.
  3. Launch Analyst's Notebook with iBridge and observe the iBridge installer.
  4. Once complete, close Analyst's Notebook with iBridge.
  5. Navigate back to C:\Windows\SysWOW64 or C:\Windows\System32 and verify that the MSXML4.DLL and MSXML4R.DLL files have been recreated.

Analyst's Notebook 8.9.9 or above is a requirement due to the fact that MSXML 6 support was added in Analyst's Notebook 8.9.9 whereas prior versions utilized MSXML 4.

Resolving The Problem

Currently there is no permanent resolution to this scenario. The MSXML 4 files, with regards to IBM i2 iBridge, can be left alone as they are not used by iBridge if MSXML 6 is installed on the system. Be aware that MSXML 4 files may be required by other applications on the system in addition to iBridge.
