Problem
Understanding the default userids and passwords on the Power HMC and how to change the hscroot or root password if it is unknown.
Symptom
The HMC comes with default passwords for both hscroot and the root users. The root user is restricted from direct login to the HMC. Sometimes the admin needs to know how to change the password of the hscroot or root passwords. This document assists in the steps required to change the password.
Environment
Any virtual x86 or ppc HMC platform
7063-CR2 or 7063-CR1
7042-CR9, 7042-CR8, 7042-CR7
Any version of HMC
Diagnosing The Problem
Whenever the password is required at initial install or when the password is unknown and changed from the default.
Resolving The Problem
Best security practices includes:
- Changing the default passwords of hscroot and root at initial install and configuration.
- Creating additional users with roles of superadmin for auditing and control.
- Creating additional users with specific authority, task and resource roles
Power HMC default userids and passwords:

The requirements for changing the passwords for the HMC default users:
| min_length | The minimum length of a password | 8 |
A superadmin user can change the password for hscroot or root if the password is unknown with the following commands that won't require knowing the current password and only prompts for the new password:
hmcuser>chhmcusr -u hscroot -t password
Enter the new password:

hmcuser>chhmcusr -u root -t password

hscroot can also change the root user password as long as the hscroot password is known.
If the hscroot password is unknown and no other superadmin password is known, engage IBM Support for further assistance.
