Deconfigured Processors and Field Core Override

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document explains Field Core Override (FCO) function and how to change it.

Resolving The Problem

This document explains Field Core Override (FCO) function and how to change it.

Power 7 and higher servers ordered with FC 2319 Field Core Override FCO limits the number of processors ordered at ship time and de-configured all the remaining processors.

If this feature is enabled, manufacturing sets the server to the allowed number of licensed processors. All processors not currently in use will be de-configured, and clearing de-configuration errors in ASM will not enable them.

DLPAR or COD/POD has no affect on the FCO option, If the processors are de-configured, the only option is to set the processor to configured using the FCO options in ASMI, then a server IPL has to take place if the system is currently up. You can change the settings for the processor and save the changes using ASMI; however, there will be no affect until the server IPL occurs.

Systems can be ordered without FCO as well so if there are problems with de-configured processors, it may not be FCO that is the cause.

To remove FCO:

The server must be powered off. You need to access ASMI to change this setting for instructions on how to access ASMI:

Accessing the ASMI using a PC or notebook and web browser

Accessing the ASMI using the HMC

When this is changed, it will configure all processors again and then it relies on license key on stand alone systems and shared pool on HMC managed systems.

From ASMI, do the following:

1. Power down partition with restart *NO.
2. When partition and server are at standby (flashing green power light).
3. Access ASMI with admin or celogin ID and password.
4. Expand System Configuration.
5. Expand Hardware Deconfiguration.
6. Click Field Core Override and change to the number of processors they are licensed for.
