Database and LUN best practices for FlashCopy Manager for Exchange

Question & Answer

Question

Are there guidelines for the setup of the LUN and Database files when using the Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange client with VSS FlashCopy snapshot backups?

Cause

Setting up volumes and filesystems to accommodate the FlashCopy VSS backups allows for more efficient backup/restore operations.

Answer

The following guidelines should be considered when setting up the systems for an Exchange environment.

  • Place database files for each storage group on their own dedicated logical volume.
  • Place logs for each storage group on their own logical volume.
  • Do not place non-Exchange data on storage volumes that are dedicated to Exchange.
  • When using hardware snapshot providers (for example, an IBM VSS provider implemented as part of IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot), it is important to avoid sharing database volumes with other databases or applications.
  • Exchange database and log volumes should be created from different storage pools on the storage system. Although an Exchange 2010 and above DAG configuration, allows logs and databases on the same logical volume, this isolation allows separate log and database disk tuning or RAID levels. Database and log volumes must also be in separate storage pools from the VSS snapshot target volumes for optimal performance.
