Data Protection for SQL server alternate restore causes MMC GUI to crash

Troubleshooting


Problem

When running a Data Protection for SQL server alternate restore using Microsoft Management Console (MMC), mmc.exe crashes.

Symptom

Microsoft Management Console has stopped working. The Windows application event viewer log shows the application error with Event ID 1000:

Cause

There are too many .NDF and .LDF files that need to be restored, which causes the path for the relocate directory to be too long. The “To Input List" value is therefore truncated, which causes mmc.exe to crash.

Resolving The Problem

This occurs in versions of the MMC older than version 4.1.4. To resolve the issue, upgrade the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for SQL client to v4.1.6 or higher.
