Ed,
Correct, no change to netapp.mib file name, the idea of search ALL IBM technotes/docs (all products ourside of N series) was to use the search terms "N series" and "MIB" since there would be lots of hits for just "MIB", not "N series MIB".
Bottom line, I'd leave the text as is (snipit below is existing text in the doc, blue is the part that is fine as is), a general reference to N series support site and I'll just make sure the technote gets published. This way, we are in sync with NetApp's doc, a general reference (branded for N series (NAS) support site) that is consistent with the
What a MIB is
A MIB file is a text file that describes SNMP objects and traps. MIBs are not configuration files. Data
ONTAP does not read these files and their contents do not affect SNMP functionality.
Data ONTAP provides two MIB files:
• A custom MIB (/etc/mib/netapp.mib)
• An Internet SCSI (iSCSI) MIB (/etc/mib/iscsi.mib)
Data ONTAP also provides a short cross-reference between object identifiers (OIDs) and object short
names in the /etc/mib/traps.dat file. This file is useful for creating user-defined traps.
Note: The latest versions of the Data ONTAP MIBs and traps.dat files are available online on
the IBM NAS support site. However, the versions of these files on the Web site do not necessarily
correspond to the SNMP capabilities of your Data ONTAP version. These files are provided to help
you evaluate SNMP features in the latest Data ONTAP version.
Techdocs and Technotes are all part of the same IBM support DCF system, searches in deep blue fill find both, but they are for slightly different things, notes are typically shorter focussed areas that include Flash Alerts, techdocs often contain a document in some form attachment (in this case, it will be the mid and other related file). The notable difference is the URL name, techdocs are ...#S700xxxx and technotes are #S100xxxx.
Any more questions in this area, feel free to ask or pass on (knowledge and understanding prevents customer confusion).

Matt,
A follow-up clarification below from NetApp on the .mib file. Can you take a quick look? I can pass your response on to NetApp.
Thanks!

Hi Ed,
Thanks for the review comments!
Here's one query from the writer (see page 96):
In the review comment, Matt says "a search for N series mib". As per my discussions with Engg, the netapp.mib file is not rebranded.
Could you please confirm that the technote also refers to this file as netapp.mib.
Our understanding is that the existing text is fine as is, and no changes are required to the content, right?
Are techdoc and technote (doc) one and the same?
We will confirm if there are any more queries or clarifications regarding the comments for this guide by the end of this week.
Thanks for clarifying.
Regards,
Satyajit

All,
Matt has provided his comments for the DOT 7.3.2 Network Management Guide. (I am expecting comments on other documents due today as well, but not until tonight.)

As of this email, I haven't received any comments for the Data ONTAP 7.3.2 Network Management Guide review draft (which has comments due today, 8/7).
However, Matt Krill is planning to review this weekend, and I will forward his comments Monday morning.

Attend: Tom Beglin, Bill Raywinkle, Matt Krill (Bob Moon unable to attend, but checked in at 4:30pm via ST)
- What problem are we trying to solve? (question came up during discussion of providing MIB file)
Head off general support and sales inquires about which Sys Mgmt Software is compatible with N series. Currently search of MIB on support site gets no hits. Further discussion decided that MIB is not the key search term, SNMP and System Management Software and specific applications is. - Background:
- Matt has had several inquiries recently about which System Management software is compatible with N series (2 from support and several from sales), some specific, eg. HP OpenView, (TomB mentioned Tivoli Event Console (TEC) and EMC Control Center) and has sent general explanation about mechanism System Management software interfaces with N series, namely SNMP via MIB, some Sys Mgmt software already list support for NetApp and based on OEM compat letter (Aug, 2007), N series would be supported.
- Another sys mgmt sw mechanism is SMI-S which is a different SAN level specification requiring sys mgmt SW integrated to take advantage.
- Should we provide Data ONTAP version specific MIB files on N series SW download?
No (closed) - Background:
- Matt verified file on NetApp web is same as what is provide in Data ONTAP /etc/mib directory, initially thought one on web was formatted or special to help view or work with. Thanks to Tom Ploski who provided MIB files from actual Data ONTAP to compare.
- Note, there have been 3 versions of the MIB files, 1.19, 1.19.1 and 1.19.3 for Data ONTAP 7.2.x. A new MIB version 2.00 comes in DOT 7.3.0 and supports SMIv2 (RFC2578) as well as Conform to RFC3584 "Coexistence between V1, V2, and V3 of the Internet-standard Network Management Framework.
- Providing for download on N series web means ongoing maintenance, little or no customer value, could in fact cause a problem is customer attempted to load wrong version of DOT, and does not address the real issue/question above. Matt sent informal question to Jeff Heller and has not got a response yet, expect it to be in agreement with our conclusion.
- Should we add keywords (SNMP, MIB) to NetWork management guide?
No (closed) - Background: Matt and Bill reviewed DCF and SNMP keyword is already there as part of content desc, agreed that MIB is not what will be searched for. Also, sets precedence (address this one small area, but 100's or 1000's of others not covered) to add these types of keywords which are not part of current doc pdf automatic search criteria (full text search) but are a part of NOW seaches (all docs, technotes, etc).
- Should we create a new technote with brief description of Sys Mgmt Software, SNMP and MIB?
Yes. Owner: Mattk to create and work with Support (Eva) / Sales (BobM) for input/review. - Background: Keep simple, info to include:
1. general overview of sys mgmt info
2. reference to Network Management Guide, chapter 5, SNMP overview
3. where to find the MIB file (Data ONTAP /etc/mib dir)
4. examples of sys mgmt software (HP, Tivoli, EMC..)
5. ?? SMI-S to be added later? again, very simple what it is, pointer to agent install/admin guide or SMI-S pub matrix, add when SMI-S agent GAs. ??

The NetApp MIB file (netapp.mib) is actually shipped on every N series machine (it is in the /etc/mib directory of the root volume). So, I suspect that it actually part of the DataONTAP image (on the compact flash and on the root volume). So, I'm not sure there is really any need for there to be any other mechanism on the IBM N series SSS site to download this file individually. Matt can you set up a 30 minute meeting with yourself, Bill (if he wants), Bob Moon and I to discuss.
Thanks,
Tom
