Abstract
IBM has identified specific hard disk drive models supported by the IBM XIV Storage System that may be exposed to possible undetected data corruption during a specific drive error recovery sequence.
The corrupted data can eventually trigger the system to log the error.
A drive firmware update that remediates against future occurrences of this issue is now available.
IBM recommends that all customers with the affected drives apply this new drive firmware.
Content
IBM has identified specific hard disk drive models supported by the IBM XIV Storage System that may be exposed to possible undetected data corruption during a specific drive error recovery sequence. The affected drives are listed in the table below.
While an undetected data corruption may occur at the drive level, the IBM XIV Storage System does have a background process which validates the integrity of data and would log an error should the condition be encountered.
A drive firmware update that remediates against future occurrences of this issue is now available.
Exposure:
XIV Model | Is the system affected? |
Gen3 Model 314 | No |
Gen3 Model 214 | Yes |
Gen3 Model 114 | Yes |
Gen2 all models | No |
Note:
· IBM XIV Gen3 model 314 is not affected by this issue.
· IBM Real-time Compression has mechanisms protecting against undetected data corruptions caused by drives. If IBM Real-time compression detects this data corruption when reading data from a drive it will take the affected volume offline until the issue is repaired. IBM Real-time compression is available on all XIV Gen3 models (114, 214 and 314) with microcode version 11.6.0.b or newer.
Affected Drives:
The table below shows the affected drives and the minimum drive firmware that is required for this issue to be resolved. Any drives not mentioned below are not affected.
Model | Capacity | Firmware level containing fix for this issue |
ST2000NM0043 | 2 TB | EC5C |
ST3000NM0043 | 3 TB | EC5C |
ST4000NM0043 | 4 TB | EC5C |
ST6000NM0054 | 6 TB | EC6D |
If you have a system containing one or more of these drives, IBM recommends you contact your Technical Advisor or Sales Representative to schedule a time for IBM to apply the drive firmware update.
