Question & Answer
Question
How to ensure mixed content http and https can be displayed by WebWidget on FireFox?
Cause
The problem appears to be entirely in the area of browser security rules for mixed https and http content, as described for FireFox here:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-does-content-isnt-secure-affect-my-safety
In the case where the content wont load, Firefox is showing the half-shield icon in the address bar to indicate that the http content was blocked. In the machine where the content did load, the icon is a grey triangle showing that only what Firefox thinks is 'potentially harmful' was blocked from the http content but the page still can't be considered safe from eavesdropping.
Answer
There does not appear to be any code fix for these types of problems -- the only solutions are:
- The user to instruct their browser to allow the mixed content, or use a browser that allows mixed content by default
- Don't use mixed content in the first place: use https:// on the URL specified for the web widget
Here are the instructions to set the configuration of the browser using 'about:config' in the firefox address field.
If one of these setting security.mixed_content.block_active_content is set to true then Firefox would not allow the WebWidget to display URL with mixed contents.

For lower Firefox version, you can refer to the following instructions to change the value of these parameters.
