Resolving The Problem
This document describes menu flow for working with DASD configuration.
Information for making changes to DASD confirmation is documented in the Disk Management section of the Systems Management documentation: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/i/7.5?topic=management-disk. This document outlines some of the basics for these operations as they pertain to these earlier releases and will be updated to reflect any changes, if any, for that release.

When working with DASD on the system, the Paging environment that the system is in determines the levels of changes that you can effect on the DASD subsystem.
Limited Paging is a state the system is in when it has only the Load Source drive to page data to and from and occurs during an IPL. If the rest of the DASD subsystem is not in use by the system, changes to its structure are possible.
In a Full Paging environment, all of the DASD is available to have data paged to and from them and, therefore, the possibilities of making changes are much more restricted.
In order to make all possible changes to DASD configuration, the system must be in a Limited Paging environment. This is accomplished via a manual IPL to DST.
To access DST, From the Front control panel, in manual mode, select Option 21 <enter>. Accessing DST after the Storage Management phase of the IPL will be in Full Paging environment. Therefore, options to make changes to the DASD subsystem are somewhat restricted.
For total control of all DASD configuration operations, perform a manual IPL to get to DST. Refer to this document for how to perform a Manual IPL: www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas8N1010050.

These are the menu options from DST:

Option 4 Work with Disk Units shows the following menu:

This option is selected from the DST main menu and shows a menu of functions that can be run for disk units. You can work with disk configuration or work with disk unit recovery. This option is not possible with basic DST authority. This option can be used in the limited paging environment. In the limited paging environment, you can service DASD and alter the system configuration while protecting your data. Some of the options available in the limited paging environment are also available in the full paging environment. For example, you can display the disk configuration in both the full and limited paging environments. In contrast, you can save disk unit data only in the limited paging environment.
Note: To avoid conflicting operations, only one version of the Work with Disk Units function is allowed to run in the system. For more information about Disk Unit Recovery, see the Systems Management documentation.
