CSS install fails on Linux due to insufficient disk space in root filesystem

Troubleshooting

Problem

The installation of FileNet Content Manager, Content Search Services (CSS) 5.5.2 on Linux to a directory on a mounted filesystem with sufficient free space fails with an error indicating there is not enough disk space for the installation.

Symptom

The command fails with the following error:

$ /binaries/css/5.5.2.0-P8CSS-LINUX64.bin -i silent -f /binaries/css/css_silent_install.txt

Warning!

This installation requires 728.29 MB of free disk space, but there are only
700.78 MB available at:

   /opt/IBM/ContentSearchServices

There is not enough disk space to perform this installation.
Please free some disk space and re-run this installer...

The css_install_log_5.5.2.0.log which shows the following:

Check Disk Space:   /opt/IBM/ContentSearchServices
       Status: SUCCESSFUL
       Additional Notes: NOTE - Required Disk Space:763,671,262 Bytes Free Disk Space:734,818,304 Bytes

The df command shows that there is sufficient space available on the mounted filesystem where CSS is being installed.  The df command also shows that there is sufficient space available on the /tmp filesystem.

However, the root (/) filesystem did not have sufficient space for the CSS installation, but the root filesystem should not be used by the installer.
