Creation of a Rational ClearQuest database results in SQL Server Error 18452

Troubleshooting


Problem

A Microsoft SQL Server error, "Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection", can occur when creating new IBM Rational ClearQuest databases.

Symptom

When trying to create a schema repository on SQL Server using the ClearQuest Maintenance Tool, you experience this error:

Connection failed:
SQL Server Error: Error 18452
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'username'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection

Cause

SQL Server is not set to use both SQL Server and Windows Authentication Mode.

Resolving The Problem

To resolve this issue, follow these instructions to set User Authentication.

SQL Server 2000:

  1. Go to Start > Programs > Microsoft SQL Server > Enterprise Manager.
  2. Right-click the Server name. Select Properties > Security.
  3. Under Authentication, select SQL Server and Windows.
  4. Stop and restart the server to take effect.

SQL Server 2005:

  1. Go to Start > Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 2005 > SQL Server Management Studio.
  2. Right-click the Server name. Select Properties > Security.
  3. Under Server Authentication, select SQL Server and Windows Authentication Mode.
  4. Stop and start the server to take effect.
