Creating a Maximo or Maxdemo Database

Question & Answer

Question

After the installation, what additional steps need to be taken for Maximo and/or Maxdemo database(s) creation?

Answer

The Maximo product installation contains an option to automatically create a Maximo/Maxdemo database. If you choose to manually create the database and/or would like additional databases you can run the MAXINST program. Additional Maximo and/or Maxdemo databases can be created after the installation using the MAXINST program.

Follow the steps in the Installation Guide to manually create a database. Refer to the section for the database platform and version you are using. Once the database has been created a Maximo or Maxdemo database can be created in that database instance.

Beginning with Maximo 7.6, the maxdemo files in (Windows) C:\ibm\smp\maximo\tools\maximo\en (Linux) /opt/IBM/SMP/maximo/tools/maximo/en are compressed. They must be decompressed before using them with maxinst.
Windows
1 Open a command prompt
2 Change directory path to: ibm\smp\maximo\tools\maximo
3 At the prompt, type maxinst -s<tablespacename> -t<tablespacename> -imaxdemo
Linux
1 Start a terminal session
2 Change directory to /opt/IBM/SMP/maximo/tools
2 At the prompt, type  ./maxinst/sh -s<tablespacename> -t<tablespacename> -imaxdemo -x

Maximo reads the maximo.properties file (Windows C:\IBM\SMP\maximo\applications\maximo\properties\ ) for database connectivity information.  It then connects to the database via a JDBC connection to create a maxdemo database.
If you would like to create an empty Maximo database, use the -imaximo flag.
For example, at the command prompt, type: maxinst -s<tablespacename> -t<tablespacename> -imaximo
The following table lists the flags that you can use with maxinst.

Flag Description
-a database alias Database alias. If not specified, uses mxe.db.url.property
-d log file directory When using the -l parameter, maxinst writes an output logfile to the specified directory. Otherwise, it outputs to the Maximo log directory. For example: ibm\smp\maximo\tools\maximo\log
-e none Causes SQL to be executed. Activated by default in maxinst.bat
-f file name Filename for properties file. If not specified, uses maximo.properties
-i file name Filename of input file (without path or extension).
-k prop. file directory Directory for properties file
-l none Outputs a detailed log file. Activated by default in maxinst.bat
-m2 none Optional value for SQL Server: Multiplies the column width for strings by 2. This value is required for double-byte character sets.
-o file name If using the -l parameter, the filename for the logfile.
-p password Password for the database connection. If not specified, uses mxe.db.password property, or MAXIMO (must be all capital letters).
-s index tablespace Tablespace for index storage
-t table tablespace Tablespace for table storage
-u user name Username for database connection. If not specified, uses mxe.db.user property, or MAXIMO (must be all capital letters).
-x doclink file separators This parameter fixes the doclink (Attached Documents) file separators. If not used, Maximo deployed to a Unix environment,  doclinks will not work properly.
-y none Multiplies the column width for strings by 2. This value is required for double-byte character sets.

CAUTION -S and -T PARAMETERS: Maxinst does not provide a default value for tablespace.
The -S and the -T PARAMETERS are MAXINST . You must always specify the data and index tablespace names. There is no default value

The -X flag is required for UNIX environments.

CAUTION If MAXINST fails for any reason, you must drop and recreate the Maximo schema before running MAXINST again.

NOTE Each flag must be followed by the parameters without a space. Example: -uMAXIMO.

After the MAXINST completes creating the Maximo database, Check installation related properties to ensure the new database connection is set correctly. These properties are used when installing add-ons or fix packs. The properties and their values are in the install.properties file. The install.properties file is located in the ibm\smp\etc folder. Alternatively, add these properties to the database from the System Properties application within Maximo.
If a new database was created, the maximo.properties file must be modified to connect to the new database. The maximo.properties file is located in the ibm\smp\maximo\applications\maximo\properties folder. See the following technote on editing maximo.properties: Modifying the Maximo.properties File in Release 7.
