Create Virtual Disk from Enhanced+ UI

Question & Answer

Question

How to Create Virtual Disk from Enhanced+ UI

Answer

This document describes how to Create Virtual Disk to a client partition using the new "Enhanced+" V8 HMC graphical user interface (GUI).

Unlike the older Classic GUI, users work directly with the virtual adapters (in VIOS and the client) but in the enhanced UI, just modify the client and select the backing device they wish the client to use. The HMC handles the creation of the partition client adapters, the creation of matching server adapters in the VIOS as well as the mapping of the virtual adapter to physical adapter.

In the navigation pane, click the ‘Resources’ icon
Click ‘All Systems’. The All Systems page is displayed
In the work pane, select a system and click ‘Actions’ > ‘View System Partitions
In the work pane, select the partition click ‘Actions’ > View Partition Properties
In the Properties pane, click ‘Virtual I/O’ > ‘Virtual Storage

Then you will find three tabs for Virtual SCSI, Virtual Fiber Channel and Virtual Optical Device, select the Virtual SCSI tab, Add Virtual SCSI Storage.

Then follow these steps to add either Physical Volume, Shared Storage Pool Volume, select ‘Logical Volume

This step will create matching VSCSI adapters in VIOS and the client partition, as well as creating the client device.

Click ‘Edit Connection’ if you want to change the server adapter ID and enter an adapter ID of your choice

Click ‘OK’ then ‘Apply

To verify the vSCSI mapping from the HMC command line:

List all managed system names:
# lssyscfg -r sys -F name

Then verify the virtual SCSI mapping by running:
# lshwres -r virtualio -m <managed_system_name> --rsubtype scsi --level lpar
