Problem

The Central Processing Unit (CPU) Identification Utility from VMware that displays CPU features for VMotion compatibility and indicates 64-bit VMware support does not work for the IBM System x3950, x3850, and x3800 on VMware ESX 3.5 update 3 or later. The utility fails on the systems with Xeon 7100 series processors. VMware fully supports these systems.

Symptom

The Central Processing Unit (CPU) Identification Utility from VMware that displays CPU features for VMotion compatibility and indicates 64-bit VMware support does not work for the IBM System x3950, x3850, and x3800 on VMware ESX 3.5 update 3 or later. The utility fails on the systems with the Intel Xeon 7100 series processors.

VMware fully supports these systems.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • System x3800, type 8865, any model
  • System x3800, type 8866, any model
  • System x3850, type 8863, any model
  • System x3850, type 8864, any model
  • System x3950 E, type 8874, any model
  • System x3950 E, type 8879, any model
  • System x3950, type 8872, any model
  • System x3950, type 8878, any model

The system is configured with at least one of the following:

  • VMware ESX Server 3.5, Update 3
