Problem
While installing Caldera 2.2 via the Lizard, the video becomes corrupt after the user first autoprobes for video settings then attempts to test display resolution.
Resolving The Problem
Problem: Video is corruptedOccurs:during, or after the installation of Caldera Systems OpenLinux 2.2
Systems Effected: IBM Netfinity 5000, 5500, 5500 M10, 5500 M20
Details:
While installing Caldera 2.2 via the Lizard, the video becomes corrupt after the user first autoprobes for video settings then attempts to test display resolution. If the user skips testing the display resolution, then the video is corrupt at the first boot. The root cause of the screen corruption is when the installation program incorrectly sets the X server to XF86_SVGA instead of XF86_S3.
Fix:
- Boot the Caldera 2.2 Installation CD-ROM following the install instructions until you get the screen titled 'Select Video Card'.
- Do not click the 'Probe' button. Click the 'Next' button without changing any settings.
- From the 'Select Monitor' screen, click the 'Next' button without changing any settings.
- From the 'Select Video Mode' screen, click the 'Next' button without changing any settings.
- Finish the install following the instructions on the screen. When the install is complete, do not click the 'Finish' button! Instead, press CTRL-ALT-F2 and login as root (no password needed).
-
Change the default runlevel to 3, via.
- Run: vi /mnt/root/etc/initab.
- Press INSERT to enter edit mode.
- Using the arrow keys and the backspace key change id:5:initdefault: to be id:3:initdefault:.
- Press ESC to access command mode then type :wq and press enter to save and exit.
- Type exit at the prompt to close the session then CTRL-ALT-F8 to return to the install screen.
- Click the 'Finish' button. The system will reboot first in graphics mode, then to a console logon. Logon as root (password is required this time.)
- With the Caldera 2.2 Installation CD-ROM still in the drive, mount it by typing... mount /dev/cdrom
- Install the the Xfree86-S3 server, by typing rpm -Uvh --force /mnt/cdrom/Packages/RPMS/XFree86-S3-3.3.3.1-3.i386.rpm. When done unmount the CD-ROM by typing umount /dev/cdrom.
-
Run XF86Setup to configure the server. (When prompted to use existing defaults, choose NO then press OK to confirm the start of the configuration program.)
- a) Click MOUSE and setup the default PS/2 mouse.
b) Click CARD and from the list choose S3Trio64V2/GX (Generic).
c) Click DETAILED SETUP and select 1Meg.
d) Click MONITOR and choose the correct setting for the attached display.
e) Click MODE SELECTION and choose the default video mode
(Note: Max resolution with 1Mb of VRAM is 1024x768 @ 8bpp (256 colors))
f) Click DONE and then OK to test the display. If the picture is off center, use the controls on the front of the monitor to adjust it. Choose 'Save the configuration and exit' then click OK to confirm the configuration was saved.
g) When prompted to link the S3 server press OK to accept.
11) Back at the prompt edit /etc/initab again as done in step 6 setting the default runlevel to 5, save and exit, then press CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot the server. (Be sure to remove the CD-ROM from the drive!)
