Resolving The Problem

This document discusses how to copy an existing Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ).

This document was last updated on 24 February 2014.

Copying an Existing Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ)

An existing Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ) can be copied doing the following:

1.Use the Work with Objects (WRKOBJ) command with the Object (OBJ) parameter set to the name of the RMTOUTQ that you want to copy (or a portion of the name such as PRT*) and the Object type (OBJTYPE) parameter set to *OUTQ. For example:

WRKOBJ OBJ(PRT*) OBJTYPE(*OUTQ)
2.Select Option 3 (Copy) on the output queue that you wish to copy and press the Enter key. This will prompt the Create Duplicate Object (CRTDUPOBJ) command.
3.The To library (TOLIB) parameter can typically be set to the default value of *FROMLIB, which indicates that the new RMTOUTQ will be created in the same library as the existing RMTOUTQ that you are copying.

Note: If you intend to use a dummy device description with the new RMTOUTQ, then the new output queue should be created in the QUSRSYS library.
4Set the New object (NEWOBJ) parameter to the name of the new RMTOUTQ to be created, and press the Enter key.

    • - Creating a Dummy Device Description to Use with a Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ)

If you intend to use a dummy device description with the new RMTOUTQ, then the new output queue will need to have been created in the QUSRSYS library. If it was, then the dummy device description can be created by copying an existing dummy device description, or by running the following Create Device Desc (Printer) (CRTDEVPRT) command:

      CRTDEVPRT DEVD(output-queue-name) DEVCLS(*VRT) TYPE(3812) MODEL(1) ONLINE(*NO) FONT(011)

For more information, refer to the following document:

N1010256: Creating a Dummy Device Description to Use with a Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ)

      • - Changing the Settings in Your New Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ)

The above steps will create an exact copy of the existing RMTOUTQ. This includes the settings for the Remote system (RMTSYS), Remote printer queue (RMTPRTQ), Connection type (CNNTYPE), Destination type (DESTTYPE), Host print transform (TRANSFORM), Manufacturer type and model (MFRTYPMDL), Workstation customizing object (WSCST), Internet address (INTNETADR), and Destination options (DESTOPT) parameters.

If configuring a new RMTOUTQ for another type of printer, or for a similar printer with a different type of external print server, then certain parameters in the output queue description may need to be changed afterward. This can be done by prompting the Change Output Queue (CHGOUTQ) command. The most common parameters that may need to be changed include the Remote system (RMTSYS), Remote printer queue (RMTPRTQ) and Manufacturer type and model (MFRTYPMDL) parameters.

For defailed instructions for changing the TCP/IP address of host name in the new Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ), refer to the following document:

N1018705: Changing the TCP/IP Address or Host Name in a Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ)

        Notes:

1.If you prompt the CHGOUTQ command but are unable to change the necessary parameters, end the remote writer using the following End Writer (ENDWTR) command:

        ENDWTR WTR(output-queue-name) OPTION(*IMMED)

and them prompt the CHGOUTQ command again.
2.If the new RMTOUTQ is configured with the Writers to autostart (AUTOSTRWTR) parameter set to 1, then the remote writer should be started automatically anytime the output queue description is changed. Otherwise, the remote writer can started using the following Start Remote Writer (STRRMTWTR) command:

        STRRMTWTR OUTQ(output-queue-name)
