Copying an Existing *LAN 3812 Printer Device Description
An existing *LAN 3812 printer device description can be copied by doing the following:
| 1. | Use the Work with Device Descriptions (WRKDEVD) command with the Device description (DEVD) parameter set to the name of the specific *LAN 3812 device description, a generic device name, or with *LANPRT to bring up a list of all existing *LAN printer device descriptions. For example: WRKDEVD DEVD(PRT05) WRKDEVD DEVD(PRT*) WRKDEVD DEVD(*LANPRT) |
| 2. | Type Option 3 (Copy) on the *LAN 3812 printer device description that you wish to copy and press the Enter key. This will prompt the Create Device Desc (Printer) (CRTDEVPRT) command with the same settings as the device description that was copied, except that the Device description (DEVD) parameter is left blank since a unique device name must be specified. |
| 3. | Change any parameters that are unique to the new device. This can include, but is not limited to, the Device description (DEVD), Port number (PORT), Form feed (FORMFEED), Manufacturer type and model (MFRTYPMDL), Paper source 1 (PPRSRC1), Paper source 2 (PPRSRC2), Envelope source (ENVELOPE), Remote location (RMTLOCNAME), System driver program (SYSDRVPGM), and Text 'description' (TEXT) parameters. |
| 4. | Press the Enter key to create the new printer device description. |
| 5. | Vary on the printer device description using the Vary Configuration (VRYCFG) command, for example: VRYCFG CFGOBJ(PRT09) CFGTYPE(*DEV) STATUS(*ON) or by pressing the F5 (Refresh) key on the Work with Device Descriptions or using the Work with Device Descriptions (WRKDEVD) command, then taking Option 8 (Work with status) on the new device description, then taking Option 1 (Vary on). |
| 6. | Start the printer writer using the Start Print Writer (STRPRTWTR) command, for example: STRPRTWTR DEV(PRT09) or by using the Work with Writers (WRKWTR) command and taking Option 1 (Start) next to the new printer device. |
| 7. | Move a spooled file to the new printer device or output queue and verify that the new printer device description is able to print successfully to the target printer. |
