Question
Sending a report by email in Excel format, the file extension is .html or .mht by default. This document describes how to directly send Excel output files with a .xls extension by adding extra advanced properties in Cognos Connection

In Server Administration, add "RSVP.FILE.EXTENSION.XLS" parameter to ReportService and BatchReportService.
- Open Cognos Connection.
- Click Launch menu in the portal and select Cognos Administration
- Click Configuration Tab
- Select Dispatchers and Services from the menu on the left side
- Click the dispatcher to configure
- Select Set Properties for ReportService
- Select the Settings tab
- Find the property that is named Advanced Settings, and Click the Edit... link
- Check Override the settings acquired from the parent entry
- In the first empty set of boxes, type in the parameter name RSVP.FILE.EXTENSION.XLS and set the value to TRUE
- Press OK.
- Click Launch menu in the portal and select Cognos Administration

- Select the Settings tab

- Restart the service.
