Troubleshooting
Problem
The Content Engine's thumbnail generation service may fail to generate thumbnail images for some documents and log the error "process exit value [1]". The Content Engine Thumbnail Extensions add-on supports automatically generating thumbnail images of the first page of the document by calling a separate ibmfnthb executable that integrates with Oracle® Outside In Image Export. On Unix servers, such as AIX, HP-UX, Linux, zLinux, and Solaris, the Outside In Image Export libraries will use an X server to render the thumbnail image. The X server may be local or remote to the Content Engine server, and there may be more than one X server that the CE configuration is configured to point to. There may be cases where the document rendering cause the ibmfnthb process to crash, or situations where the X server becomes unavailable and in certain cases causing the ibmfnthb process to crash, in both cases returning the exit value 1.
Symptom
The Content Engine fails to generate thumbnail images for documents and the p8_server_error.log contains the warning "Failed to generate thumbnail for input file" with the error "process exit value [1]".
