Problem

Performance of a BPD or service is impacted by the growth of data in BPM database tables: LSW_BPD_INSTANCE, LSW_TASK, LSW_SNAPSHOT, and LSW_PO_VERSION

Symptom

You notice slower performance on a business process or a service.  You might even detect lock timeout exceptions when trying to lock a bpd instance
Caused by: com.lombardisoftware.core.TeamWorksException: 
PreparedStatementCallback; bad SQL grammar [SELECT BPD_INSTANCE_ID FROM 
LSW_BPD_INSTANCE WHERE BPD_INSTANCE_ID = ? FOR UPDATE]; nested exception
is java.sql.SQLSyntaxErrorException: ORA-02049: timeout: distributed 
transaction waiting for lock 


The lock timeout exceptions vary depending on the database server being used. 

For IBM DB2, SQLState, a lock timeout error is SQLCODE: -911, SQLSTATE: 40001, SQLERRMC: 68
For Oracle, a lock timeout error is the ORA-02049 error.
For Microsoft SQLServer, a lock timeout error is com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: Lock request time out period exceeded.
