Collecting Managed System VPD

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document describes how to collect server VPD data using Version 7 HMC.

Resolving The Problem

You can view Capacity on Demand information for numerous categories on a given managed system.

In the example below, you will see options for PowerVM, Enterprise Enablement and Other Advanced Functions:

Server task panel

Viewing this information shows you the exact same information regardless of which option you select.

CoD Advanced Functions Code Information....

Enterprise Enablement Code Information....

PowerVM Code Information

You can save this data (click on the Save... button), and you will see the following dialog box:

Save activation code information panel

Save to media allows you to save the data to a formatted DVD-RAM in the optical drive of the HMC or a USB drive.
Save to a file on a remote system allows you to ftp the information to an ftp server that your HMC has access to.

Once the file is sent to the remote system, you should use your PC to download the file and attach the file to an e-mail message to send to your intended audience.

Note: The Serviceability, Collect VPD task shown below is not recommended. This collection requires an RMC connection to all partitions which can be problematic for i5 partitions. The CoD VPD data contains all the CEC VPD and is usually sufficient for entities requesting VPD data. The Serviceability VPD Collection method tries to collect data from each partition - which is normally not required.
