'The Cognos Controller link is not installed ... COM object that has been separated' caused by using Excel 64-bit

User runs a report (for example a journal across report). This displays OK on the screen. User now tries to send it to Excel. An error appears. However, if the user launches Excel directly (not from via Controller), user can see the Controller Add-in successfully registered (visible in Excel). User can successfully use the Controller Excel link (directly in Excel) to log in (and work with it - for example to run reports).

Error message when trying to send a 'journal across' report to Excel:

The Cognos Controller Link is not installed

After clicking OK:

There are many different potential causes for the error "The Cognos Controller Link is not installed"

  • For more examples, see separate IBM Technote #1396195.

This Technote specifically relates to the scenario where the cause is that the client device has a 64-bit version of Excel installed. This is unsupported for all versions of Controller before 10.3.

  • TIP: A list of supported environments is available inside Technote #7014433.

Client device has a 64-bit version of Excel installed, but is using Controller 10.2.1 (or earlier)..

Resolving The Problem

Upgrade to Controller 10.3 or later.

Uninstall the 64-bit version of MS Office from the client device.

  • Afterwards, install a 32-bit version of MS Office.
