IBM Support

Clarification on the configuration parameter SMX_NUMPIPES

News

Abstract

You want to tune the connection between an Informix Primary and Secondary or an ER server by configuring additional pipes for server multiplexer group (SMX) connections, but aren't sure how to set SMX_NUMPIPES.

Content

Starting in IDS 12.10.xC6, SMX_NUMPIPES can be set to a value between 1 and 32767 to help tune for better performance between a Primary and Secondary, but normally shouldn't exceed two times the number of CPU VPs configured for the server.

When tuning SMX_NUMPIPES, the value should be changed on the Secondary server instead of the Primary.

If you are tuning multiple Secondary servers in a cluster, it is possible to set SMX_NUMPIPES to a different value on each Secondary based on workload.

If you have an updatable Secondary and currently use the configuration parameter UPDATABLE_SECONDARY to tune for additional SMX pipes, set UPDATABLE_SECONDARY to 1 and adjust the number of pipes using SMX_NUMPIPES.

For Read Only Secondary servers, use only SMX_NUMPIPES for tuning SMX connections.

To view SMX connection statistics, use the following onstat utility command:
onstat -g smx

To view SMX session statistics, use the following onstat utility command:
onstat -g smx ses
