Troubleshooting
Problem
The BladeCenter Cisco Switch Module Web interface requires the use of a Java plug-in.
Resolving The Problem

Symptoms
---
The BladeCenter Cisco Switch Module Web interface requires the use of a Java plug-in. Cisco tested this Java plug-in as JRE 1.4.0. Since that test, other versions have been releases, such as JRE 1.4.2. Cisco has not tested with JRE 1.4.2, so Java versions higher that 1.4.0 are not officially supported by the Cisco Switch Module. However, higher versions of the Java plug-in will operate satisfactorily with the Cisco Switch Module.
When you load a version of java higher than JRE 1.4.0, a warning message appears. The message states that this version of Java is not supported, "Do you want to continue?". You can then click the Continue button and the Java plug-in will work with the Cisco switch.
Higher versions of the Java plug-in have not been tested by Cisco or IBM, and are not officially supported.
Affected configurations
---
The system may be any of the following IBM eServer servers:
- an IBM eServer BladeCenter, type 8677, any model
- an IBM eServer BladeCenter HS40, type 8839, any model
- an IBM eServer BladeCenter HS20, type 8678, any model
- an IBM eServer BladeCenter HS20, type 8832, any model
- an IBM eServer BladeCenter JS20, type 8842, any model
The system is configured with BRET59D and later diagnostics.
The system's diagnostics pass.
Solution
---
The fix for this problem is to load the Java plug-in JRE 1.4.0.
Workaround
---
You start a web session with the Cisco Switch Module; this procedure is documented in the Cisco Switch Module Installation Guide. As the web session panel is being loaded, a message states that a Java plug-in higher (more recent) than JRE 1.4.0 is not supported, "Do you want to continue?". Click Continue and the Cisco Switch Module session will operate satisfactory.
Additional information
---
Cisco has not done any formal testing with Java versions higher than JRE 1.4.0. However, a number of engineers are using that program in their web browser. While these higher versions of Java are not officially supported, they do work. However, any problems associated with its use are the responsibility of the user and not IBM nor Cisco.
