Problem
This technote identifies a defect affecting the IBM Rational ClearCase reformatvob command and the ClearCase MultiSite mkreplica command where dumping the database fails with the error "Child process aborted with signal 10" on UNIX or hangs on Windows.
Symptom
UNIX or Linux
Attempts to create a replica or run reformatvob on UNIX results in these errors.
REPLICA CREATION:
multitool: Error: Child process aborted with signal 10
multitool: Error: Unable to exec command "/opt/rational/clearcase/etc/dumpers/db_dumper.54 -mkreplica /tmp/test.vbs/db": -1.
multitool: Error: Replica creation terminated prematurely due to error -- aborting.
REFORMATVOB:
cleartool: Error: Child process aborted with signal 10
cleartool: Error: Unable to exec command "/usr/atria/etc/dumpers/db_dumper.53
/tmp/test.vbs/db.reformat": -1.
cleartool: Error: Trouble dumping versioned object base "/tmp/test.vbs".
WINDOWS:
Attempts to create a replica or run reformatvob on Windows results in a hang due to CPU usage increase during the dump phase of reformatvob or mkreplica.
Example:
C:\>cleartool reformatvob -dump -f \\host1\ccstg_e\VOBs\test.vbs
Reformatting can take multiple hours for large VOBs. During the
reformat, the VOB will be unavailable for normal use. If you install
a different version of ClearCase or install ClearCase with different
options, you may need to reformat again.
If you are in doubt about the significance of the reformat operation
or how to perform VOB backups, see the documentation for administering
ClearCase.
If the reformat processing is interrupted for any reason, resume the
processing by re-running the reformatvob command.

Note: You will need to kill the db_dumper process to restore the host to normal operations.
