Problem
This technote explains how to check the network connection between the IBM® Rational® license server and the client system.
Resolving The Problem
The following procedures let you check the network connection between the license server and the client system.
Microsoft® Windows® platforms:
1. On a Windows client, bring up a command prompt by clicking Start > Run and typing cmd in the "Open" text box. If your system is running Windows 95 and you do not have the cmd.exe on your computer, you can go to Start > Programs > Accessories > MS-DOS (or Command Prompt) as the alternative to cmd.
2. Type
ping <server_hostname> at the command prompt.Example:
C:\>ping asdf01
You should receive four replies.
If you see an IP address appear, a system of that hostname has responded.
There might be more than one system on the network with the same hostname.
To make sure the IP address that you see in the Window is the license server's IP address, check the IP address on the server.
To verify the IP address information for the Windows FLEXlm license server:
- Go to your license server and click Start > Rational Software > License Tools.
- Click the "System Settings" tab in the "LMTools" dialog box.
- Check the IP address under "Hostid Settings."
UNIX® platforms:
On a UNIX client, type ping server_hostname from any directory location.
Example:
ping asdf01
You should receive response with the host name and IP address or a response that the system "is alive"
To verify the IP address for the UNIX FLEXlm license server:
type; /sbin/ifconfig

If you cannot ping the license server by hostname, ping it by its IP address. If this is successful, you will have to either correct the name resolution problem on your network or replace the hostname with the IP address in the license key file.
