Changing the location of external content for FileNet Content Engine documents.

Question & Answer

Question

Some FileNet Content Engine (CE) documents have content stored externally to the system. Can the location of that external content be modified after a CE document is created?

Cause

The location or path for external content referenced by CE documents may change. If that occurs, it may be necessary to update the URL or path to the external content or the Content Engine will contain broken links to the external content.

Answer

The URL or path to external CE content is stored in binary columns in the database. The system properties in which the data is stored can only be populated when a document is created. There is no way using FileNet Enterprise Manager (FEM) or even using the CE APIs to update the external content link for existing documents.

The recommended approach to correct the link CE documents have to external content is to check out the document in question and then check-in a new version of the document. When the document is checked-in (either manually using FEM or programmatically), the new/correct link to the external content can be specified at that time.
