Changing the IP Address or Host Name Specified in a *LAN Printer Device Description

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document discusses how to change the IP address or host name specified in a *LAN printer device description.

Resolving The Problem

This document describes how to change the IP address or host name in a *LAN 3812 printer device description, including *LAN IPDS device descriptions, *LAN 3812 PJL device descriptions, *LAN 3812 SNMP device descriptions, *LAN 3812 IPP device descriptions, as well as *LAN 3812 device descriptions that use the LPR Print Driver (TSPLPRD) utility.

*LAN printer device descriptions can be configured to specify either a host name or an IP address in the Remote location (RMTLOCNAME) parameter, or in the case of a *LAN 3812 IPP device description the RMTLOCNAME can be set to specify a URL that uses a host name or an IP address.

Remote Location (RMTLOCNAME) Parameter Specifies a Host Name not an IP address

If the Remote Location (RMTLOCNAME) parameter is set to specify a host name, instead of an IP address, and the IP address is changed in the printer or print server hardware, then the RMTLOCNAME parameter does not need to be changed. However, if the host name is specified through CFGTCP Option 10 (Work with TCP/IP host table entries) rather than on a DNS server, then the host table entry for the old printer IP address will need to be removed and a host table entry with the new printer IP address will need to be added.

The writer may need to be ended for a period of time to let the ARP Cache clear. Otherwise, the Verify TCP/IP Connection (VFYTCPCNN or PING) command should be used to verify that the printer can be successfully pinged using both the host name and printer IP address before attempting to print through the *LAN printer device description.

Remote Location (RMTLOCNAME) Parameter Specifies an IP address

If the Remote Location (RMTLOCNAME) parameter is set to specify an IP address and IP address is changed in the printer or print server hardware, then the RMTLOCNAME parameter will need to be changed.

The *LAN printer device description does not need to be deleted and re-created to change the setting in the RMTLOCNAME parameter. Instead, use the following step-by-step instructions:

1.Use the End Writer (ENDWTR) command with the When to end writer (OPTION) parameter set to *IMMED to end the writer immediately. For example:

ENDWTR WTR(printer-device-name) OPTION(*IMMED)
2.Use the Vary Configuration (VRYCFG) command to vary off the printer device description. For example:

VRYCFG CFGOBJ(printer-device-name) CFGTYPE(*DEV) STATUS(*OFF)
3.Use the Change Device Description (Printer) (CHGDEVPRT) command to change the Remote location (RMTLOCNAME) parameter to the new IP address. For example:

CHGDEVPRT DEVD(printer-device-name) RMTLOCNAME('new-ip-address')
4.Use the Vary Configuration (VRYCFG) command to vary on the printer device description. For example:

VRYCFG CFGOBJ(printer-device-name) CFGTYPE(*DEV) STATUS(*ON)
5.Use the Start Print Writer (STRPRTWTR) command to start the writer again. For example:

STRPRTWTR WTR(printer-device-name)
