Changes made to documents in UNC path in "Link to an external document" in IBM Content Navigator

Troubleshooting

Problem

In previous versions, when you add a document, you can select "Link to an external document" and specify the UNC path. From IBM Content Navigator version 3.0 La1, 3.0.1 or 2.0.3.8 LA5, you cannot enter the UNC path in the URL input box.
When you open a document with a URL that begins with the file: protocol, a blank page displays.

Cause

From IBM Content Navigator version 3.0 La1, 3.0.1 or 2.0.3.8 LA5, you must include a protocol to the UNC path because of security concerns.
Examples of protocols are:
file:, ftp:, ftpes:, ftps:, http:, https:, mailto:, scp:, sftp:, x-ftps:
Since browser vendors have security restrictions on URL protocols, like file:, to open the URL in web applications, most browser links do not work due to these restrictions.

Resolving The Problem

When you add a file as a "Link to an external document", you can use your choice of protocol. However, if you use the file: protocol, you might need to create a plug-in to open the file in the browser. The following links might help you in creating a plug-in.
